Notes
Moved with the family from Culpeper County to Harrison County, Virginia (WV) and settled in the Clarksburg/Bridgeport areas. Became a Baptist Minister and preached at the Old Baptist Meeting House Church in Bridgeport ('M. Maddox' appears in the pastors list on the church's memorial plaque). Buried next to his first wife. No land ownership records or recorded will were found; the 1860 census of Harrison County lists him and his second wife receiving mail from the Clarksburg Post Office; he appears to have died a very poor man, and some suggest he was buried by the county. In 1848 he wrote a letter recounting the Maddox family history, now in the Virginia State Library Archives Collection (transcribed by genealogist Patricia Cornwell and printed in 'Maddox Family Records' by Roberta Vesta Laundrum Wiley, 1974, Parkville, Missouri); the compiler judges most of its events and dates correct but notes errors, including an otherwise unattested 'Appleby Maddox'. His first-marriage date is given inconsistently in the source.
