Listed in the 1880 census of Jackson County as a 17-year-old farm laborer. Worked in the timber industry in Jackson County, was a farmer and lived from the land. By a deed dated 23 December 1881 (drawn up by James H. Currey; recorded in Deed Book 28, pages 491-492 by L. H. Lemley, Clerk of Courts, on 13 March 1886), he agreed to take care of Matilda (Bolin) Cheuvront, last wife of Aaron Cheuvront, in her old age and to take care of her burial, in return receiving the last 48 acres, more or less, of the Cheuvront property on Sand Creek; he appears to have kept up his end of the deal and received ownership. The date of his second marriage is given as '18 June 1907-(1908)' in the table and '18th of June 1907/1908' in the narrative, both years retained.
